Big Change Ahead: Federal Refunds Going Digital

Under a new federal mandate (Executive Order 14247), all tax refund payments from the IRS must be received through direct deposit. This mandate takes effect on September 30, 2025.

What this means for you:

If you expect a tax refund, be sure your bank account and routing numbers are included and up to date before your tax return is filed.

Next steps: 

While the IRS is still accepting paper checks for 2024 tax returns, that will soon end. Additional guidance and information for 2025 taxes will be issued prior to the 2026 filing season.
