While recruiters might ask, “Tax or Audit?” there’s a lot more to explore in public accounting. To offer you a broader perspective, we interviewed Mary Katherine, an Outsourced Accounting Service Consultant, to discuss her experience at Wilkins Miller and the variety of opportunities the field has to offer.
Which service area do you work in and what do you do for your clients?
“I work mainly in OAS, but also work in tax about 10% of my time. I help clients maintain up-to-date financial information and provide advisory services to help them make business decisions like adding a new location. I also am the acting controller/CFO for some clients.”
What kinds of projects do you work on and what times of the year are most busy for you?
“A good portion of my time is spent on financial statements and meeting with clients to discuss their KPIs, trends and provide advice. I also spend time helping my nonprofit clients apply for grants, make financial decisions, handle their audits, etc. My busiest time tends to be December because of year-end tax planning. January is also a busy month because it encompasses month end, quarter end, and year end.”
What makes your service area unique/Why did you choose it?
“It is a service area not taught in schools. We are constantly in contact with our clients, not just during specific periods. Each day is completely different.”
What skill sets are most important to succeed in your service area?
“The most important skills needed to succeed in OAS would include attention to detail, strong organizational skills to manage quick turnaround times, and an inquisitive nature to effectively identify and resolve issues in client books.”
